One of the more versatile and interesting outdoor bonsai trees is the Japanese Grey Bark Elm. It can be styled and grown in many different ways. Because of these many bonsai collectors actually have several Japanese Grey Bark Elms in their collection, each trained into a different style. Traditionally, the Zelkova Serrata, as it is also called, is grown in the broom style, but for those who are just starting out, this bonsai can also be grown in other, less demanding styles such as the informal upright style. No matter how you decide to train and grow your Japanese Grey Bark Elm, know that its light green leaves and tall, twisting trunk are sure to make it a favorite among your visitors.
Be certain, though, that you keep this outdoor bonsai tree sheltered from the weather. All bonsai hate the harsh winds and hard rain, so be certain you grow them in a place that is somewhat sheltered, like a courtyard or a patio. You also need to remember that most bonsai do not do well in direct sunlight, especially older bonsai. Indirect sunlight is okay, but you should try to avoid allowing any of your bonsai to get direct sunlight for more than a few hours a day.
