My 3 year old got a hold of a resistance band and without being prompted by an adult knew right away how they were meant to be held and used. Was this some lucky accident? Hardly. Kids are instinctive. She just figured it out.
Well it also didn’t hurt knowing that her mom is a Pilates instructor so somewhere in that developing memory bank of hers she remembered how this piece of exercise equipment worked.
So it got me thinking what else does my 3 year old know when it comes to resistance training. Well she knows her way around the neighborhood play scape that’s for sure. Why so? Again she learned by watching other kids climb and slide and such that when it became her time to join in the fun she just knew what she had to do. Pulling herself up on the monkey bars just to slide down the chute took some work on her part yet she knew the rewards for her hard labor. And lets not forget the swings. Watching her pump her tiny legs and pulling back on the linked chain while throwing her body back then pushing her body forward only to repeat the process. Getting herself a little movement on the swing encouraged her to continue to work her muscles. Of course a little push from daddy now and then would be welcomed too.
